How does planting flowers help conserve water?

im doing a poster board about conserving water..My teacher says flowers help but i dont know how.. first one to give me the answer im looking for gets the best answer!!

There are some flowers and shrubs you can plant that are "drought-resistant" that require little or no water to continue living, and they all prevent runoff. When you plant these types of plants in lieu of regular plants, you save the water that would be required for watering normal plants or grass.

California poppies, Clarkias, Shirley poppies, moss rose, blanket flower and sweet alyssum are all flowers that can bloom with little or no water.

In some states, the government even provides incentives for those who plant these kinds of flowers or shrubs or those that xenoscape.

It’s time to start planting flowers?

I need some suggestions on flowers that do well in part sun. Also they will be potted ( live in apartment). Last year was my first time gardening, it didn’t go so well. Any info would be great!

Part sun.. begonias can do very nicely in containers. When you buy your plants, talk to the folks in the nursery area for some advice on plants that will do well in your area. (local nurseries are MUCH better at this than the box stores, but the box store is cheaper.. you decide) Be sure you choose a GOOD potting soil and not just the cheapest stuff you can find. Good potting soil has the right amount of drainage and water holding capacity and is specifically blended for container plants.

Remember that plants need food, too. You can use a controlled release fertilizer (like Osmocote) or a water soluble like peters or Miracle Gro. Use fertilizers according to label directions.. don’t overfeed.

Use as large a container as you can. plant several plants in each. It looks nice and the larger mass of soil will mean less chance of drying out. Be sure that you have drainage holes in the bottom of the container and know that water running out the drain hole is OK.. in fact, it’s good! it means that the soil has adequate moisture and that the overage is being sent through. Plants can drown if the drainage is not right.

Best of luck.. container gardens can be a nice way to "liven" up a small space. :-)

I live in Cincinnati, OH. When can I start planting flowers and how do i start?

We have two little spots that have been rocked off by the previous owner, it really looks like nothing more than dirt. How do I start the planting process, its now late september, do I need an early start to start getting things ready for spring, or can I start planting now to bloom in spring? I’ve never done any kind of gardening before and dont even know how to turn my dirt into something of substance! Help!!!

Mix soil amendments into the planting area,(composted manure, composted bark, and peat moss work great). You can plant pansies, violas, ornamental cabbage, and ornamental kale now.You can also plant spring blooming bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, hyacinths, and crocus.Mix bone meal in the planting hole for the bulbs.I like to use a slow release fertilizer for the winter plants, and a starter fertilizer at the time of planting to get the roots off to a good start.

How do you become greener to our planet by planting flowers?

like flowers give us the bad oxygen!

i think that is a matter of opinion. i didnt think flowers necessarily give off bad oxygen, but hey, im not a scientist so i dont know. if it gives off oxygen and makes our world beautiful, then it makes it greener. also, its part of the cycle of life. bees need the pollen to spread, the birds eat the seeds, and bugs that the flowers attract, caterpillars eat the leaves, so they can turn to butterflies, and many other creatures are affected too. thank you for your question, it really made me think and i love a challenge!

Are there any plants or flowers I could start planting now?

January 27, 2010 by admin

I know it’s late in the season, I’m just curious if there are any plants or flowers that could stand to be planted and still bloom.

There are several that you can plant now. Pansies, violas, ornamental cabbage and kale do well through the winter except in the coldest zones.Along with mums already mentioned, you can plant snapdragons which do well until the first hard freeze (the dwarf varieties seem to survive longer).
